5 Steps to Throwing an Awesome Party

We're baaaaack! Another link up with my favorite ladies! This weeks topic, Look What I Can Do: Something I Made

I always see all these blogs with people who do DIY around their house, and it always looks so good. They refurbished that dresser and made a headboard out of nothing...so amazing, but I don't have one decorating bone in my body. I wish I did though! I try...but mostly I have my mom come over and tell me what to do :)  Then I copy it year after year and do the same thing every year.

That being said I do love crafting. I won't even go into the hundreds of pages of scrapbooking, one day I'll have to show you my collection. Unfortunately all scrapbooking has pretty much stopped since having kids...:( But I have discovered online books, and I'll have to do a post on that too...okay I digress. I'm going to show you what I do know how to do, how to throw a party :)

source for the background

Let's just assume you have a reason to celebrate and you've picked a date.

Step 1:

Think of the person you're throwing the party for and then chose a theme. I almost always have a theme, it's what makes a party fun right?

Chose whether you're going to buy invitations and send them out, or do an Evite or Paperless Post (I like this one because it's a little fancier than evite, and it's mostly free). If you do go with the snail mail route, I like using Vista Print. The prices are super reasonable, and every card is really customizable. You can take what they have and move words around, add more words, it's awesome. Granted they don't have the fancy choices that some of the other sites have, but the price more then makes up the differnce. For Mini Fox's birthday I had someone do the graphics on Etsy and then I used Vista print to print them out.

Step 2:

Once your theme is chosen, run with it. I always try to think of what decorations I want. With birthday parties, I always want a Happy Birthday Sign, so whether you buy it or make it, I almost always start there, that way I can base my decorations off of that. I heavily use my Cricut to make all of the decorations.

Step 3:

Decorations: Try to buy as much as you can. I always try Oriental Trading Company first, then I hit up Party City. Occasionally I'll hit up Dollar Tree just to see what they have. I actually found cute wheel barrel at Big Lots of all places, only $5. Plus the kids played with it for the next 2 years, until the gardener decimated it, oops!

A great place is Facebook. We have several after party FB groups that people try to sell their party stuff. It's how I usually sell everything I've done. Throw an ISO (In Search Of) post out there and see if anyone can help you out. It's how I got a lot of the ladybug stuff.

The lady bug month by month was bought from someone else, so was that container holding the flowers, saved me so much time not having to make that stuff myself, which I probably would have done.

If you're doing party favors, you can really make them look fancy buy buying those candy bags and then printing your own top part, and stapling everything in it, looks fancy, but in reality it's all you!

Another easy way to make things "fancy" is do something fun with the plasticware.

This was for the Bridal Shower I threw for my Best Friend
Something else that brings a big pop to the party, things hanging from the ceiling. Seriously...how boring would this EZ-UP be if there weren't some Tissue Pompoms?

Just remember this: It's also okay to buy everything! For my sister's surprise party, I bought almost everything! The only thing I made were the "flower" poofs, using a modification of my PomPom Tissue DIY.

Step 4:

The food, duh. You have to have good food. I try to come up with something that matches the theme of the party. Like for Baby Fox's 3.5 birthday party we had BBQ food from Lucille's. I thought getting ribs = dinosaurs bones...hey good enough for me :) For Mini Fox's Lady Bug party, we did sort of a sweet picnic theme, chicken salad sandwiches, fruit, a few different salads.

A great place to really spruce up the decorations is the food. Create little signs for everything, it's a really nice touch and even though it's super obvious that it's fruit, a cute sign helps make it look so much more complete.

This is from Mini Fox's Baptism, the theme obviously was baptism, but I made these little cards using the logo from the invitation. This was the invitation, I went into Vista Print, pretending I wanted to buy the coordinating Thank You cards, then screen shot that, put it in Paint saved the picture, put that picture in Word added some words...and there you go.

Looks like I had these made right? Nope just at home on my computer.

Step 5:

Know where you want stuff the night before, drink table, cake, food, gifts, etc.  Usually we try (we're getting better at this), to set up as much as we can the night before, as most people probably do. We literally put the bowls and serving trays that we want, and I put labels on them, chicken salad sandwiches go here, crockpot of meatballs goes here, etc. That way when you're running late the next day, the people helping you know where everything goes because you've labeled it.

Don't forget the music. Even if it's just softly playing in the background, it just changes the mood of the party when there is music.

There you have it, click here to see the parties that I've thrown. Mostly they revolve around kids...but hey you can use the same principles to throw just about any party!

Now go check out some of the other ladies, and see what they've made.

Dinosaurs and Monster Truck Party

Not sure if you guys knew, but Baby Fox was born on Christmas

Yep that's a big stocking! And his hat said "Special Delivery"
Instead of throwing him a birthday party in December (cause let's face it, there are only so many shopping days in December and the last thing people want to do is go to a birthday party on a potential shopping day, you're welcome economy), we throw him a half birthday party. This was last years party, Construction Theme (My most repinned thing on Pinterest).

This year's theme was started out with Dinosaurs...and then suddenly after the invitations were sent out, he wanted monster trucks too. If that doesn't say boy, I don't know what does. If he wants monster trucks too, dinosaurs and monster trucks he'll get.

I relied very heavily on my trusty cricut. If you don't have one, you NEED one, yes you need, I feel that strongly about it. Wait for Joann's to put it on sale, or amazon, just get it, you'll thank me later. Okay, back to the party.

I got a bunch of stuff from Oriental Trading Company, like these dinosaur napkins and plates and these monster truck napkins and plates  and these blow up dinosaurs and then made the rest of the decorations.

I found this gem from a FB after party resale group, score! But you can buy it here.
We've had enough parties at the house to know what works for party flow. Having the food here, keeps people moving around the house.

Close up, if you can't tell those are t-rex foot prints

I lined up the dinosaurs and trucks just above the food, and then labeled those. They were super last minute, and I didn't print out a mac and cheese one, although I think people were too busy eating the yummy food to notice. We catered from Lucilles's BBQ, they have excellent food and if you order their mac and cheese for catering, tell them you want it extra creamy. When we got it, we though, oh gosh, we got too much, and then it was the thing people were scraping the bottom to get every little bit out.

I also had dinosaurs around the house, some of the trucks were chasing the dinosaurs, some dinosaurs were chasing the trucks and then Mr. made one of the trucks run over a dinosaur, poor guy he never had a chance.

Drinks, there were about 30 adults and 20 kids and we just bought a 12 can case of Coke Zero, Diet 7-up and Coke, and that was plenty of soda and we had lemonade and of course water. Love those little half bottles from Costco. I rounded out the drinks with some organic juice boxes for the kids.

It was actually a swim party but I didn't get one picture of people swimming. I always tell myself I'll be better at taking pictures, but then when the time comes, the party is always too fast and I miss the opportunity. Darn.

Like I said Monday, I made the most delicious cookies ever, and people couldn't stop eating or raving about them. I might be making them again for 4th of July...I don't expect there to be left overs.

Cake table, a good friend made the cake, isn't it awesome?

Wait let me get a close up for you.

How cool is that volcano? The bottom part is chocolate while the top part is rice krisipies! (TIP: Our friend bought a sheet cake from Costco, and then scraped off all of the frosting and decorated it herself, guess how much frosting was on it? 3.5 pounds, yep you read that correctly 3.5 pounds of frosting, think about that next time you eat a cake from Costco)
See, everyone discovered the cookies and their almost gone...
We did cake about 2 hours after the party started (just before people started to leave for nap time)

Most of the people from the party...some people were being dumb camera shy and didn't want to get in, go figure.

All in all it was a great party with some even better friends. Thank you for sharing in Baby Fox's half birthday.

Cousin #3

Baby on left is 7 months, Mini Fox (9.5 months) and Baby on the right is 5 months

Next year, note to self, take more pictures! Or designate someone to do it!

TBB Asks - August Edition + Announcement!

Hello Foxy Friends! I'm not going to make you wait till the end of this post to tell you our announcement...it's too exciting not to share! As The Blended Blog continues to grow and evolve, sometimes it's necessary to make changes and one of those changes is that we've added two new members! Introducing KellyAnn from This Blonde Shopping Bag and Vanessa from X-tremely V.  If you don't follow these ladies you should, head on over to The Blended Blog to find out a little more about them.  Okay let's get this party started.

1. Favorite birthday party as a child? Hmmm...I remember once going to a community pool and having my birthday party there, it was a small group of kids (can't even remember who), and we had so much fun. So I guess that one, since that is the only birthday party I can remember as s kid...as a young adult, for my 17th birthday my parents surprised me at band camp and took myself and all of my friends out to lunch, that was fun.

2. Do you like to entertain? Yes! I love it, the reason we bought a house with a pool, so we could throw parties and have all of the kids want to hang out at our house...mostly so I can keep an eye on Baby and Mini Fox. Some of the parties I've thrown, you can find here. My favorites are when I threw Baby Fox a Super Hero Party (mostly I think the cake I made turned out awesome, I took a ton of pictures of that), and when I threw my sister her Fiesta Party for her 40th, I really like making backgrounds for the kids themed party. This under the sea one was pretty awesome.

Little Mermaid Backdrop

3.  What kind of parties are your favorite? Fun ones? haha...I like a mix of both, when it's an adult only party so we don't have to worry about what the kids are going to eat or what's going to entertain them. But then, I love going to kids parties and seeing how much fun the kids are having together.

4.  Big or Small Parties? I like to attend small parties, with people I know, so you can really get to talk to people, but when i throw parties they are big. Mr. and my philosophy, invite everyone so no one feels left out. At least we try to follow that philosophy.

5.  Favorite thing to do at Parties? Eat the good food, assuming it's no pizza from a kids party, haha! Also the time I get to catch up with friends, cause sometimes that's the only time I get to see them.

6.  Party food favorite? Hmmm...chips and dip...salsa, onion dip, guacamole, I don't discriminate.

7.  Favorite flavor of birthday cake? Hmmm...I guess if I have to pick it's chocolate with chocolate frosting (butter cream, not fondant, blah). But I do like making fun cakes for the kids for their birthdays.

8.  Balloons? Yep, all the way! They just make everything fun. Have you tried getting a balloon drop? The kids love it and it's so stinkin' fun!

9.  Best Party Song? Not sure...I am horrible at songs...but one that does get my college friends and I on the dance floor every single time....Baby Got Back...haha.

10.  Do you like to Dance? Yep! Although I don't do it a lot and I'm terrible at it. Give me a few drinks and I'm good to go!

Head on over to The Blended Blog to link up your answers! I can't wait to see what everyone writes.

Avengers 1/2 Birthday Party

Hi Foxy Friends! I'm here to sort of talk to you about Baby Fox's Avengers Party. As always I fail at taking pictures when I'm hosting the party!  Oh well! The fun part of planning this was Baby Fox was totally into it. He wanted to come with me to pick out the party supplies and wanted to help me decorate. While we were decorating he said, I love decorating with you Mama...melt this Mama heart.

I didn't even get a good picture of the background I was doing! What, total blogger fail! I even started taking pictures to do a tutorial...and then totally failed. Luckily I have another tutorial that is very similar, just different building shapes. And I used grey windows instead of yellow because Baby Fox wanted me to, and I thought it would make it more dramatic.

I took this picture thinking I'll take another one when people aren't in it, then the night rolled aorund and I forgot and then the very next day it feel down so we just took it down totally forgetting to take a picture, darn!
I bought the Happy Birthday sign and the webs and spiders were left from last year. Getting two years using some of the same party decorations is a definite win! Got our money worth out of that one.

The food was Mexican, yum! Pork, chicken, beans, nachos. Then I added some fruit to be healthy and some hotdogs for those kids that don't really eat Mexican...namely the birthday boy! Again no pictures, blogger fail! I always say I'm going to be better...not this year apparently.

I bought this sign, and hung part here:

And the other part here, since the one wall that could fit everything was currently being used.

The rest of it we added above the French doors.

Baby Fox insisted that we have these streamers, it was one of the first things he put in the shopping cart. Plus we had some left over from our Spiderman Party last year. Baby Fox picked the exact location of each streamer and I hung them up.

Even the ones outside he showed me where to put them.

The Bam, Boom, Ka-Pow signs were left over from last year. You better believe I'm keeping these for another year...can we say three-peat?

These signs were left over from last year and we put them around the house, these were simple goodie bags, bought the bags with Avenger theme and then added a small coloring to-do book and some crayons and then put a bunch of candy it is to fill them up.

I think the best part of the party was the cityscape and then the cake! Remember his birthday cake for his actual birthday in December? Well I did the same inside but I totally different outside...he was in awe of it. I think I was too, carpal tunnel city, but worth it! And there is this electric thing I could have used, that of course a friend told me about afterwards, never again will I go through that pain! haha...

Those are those homemade Oreo Cookies that are always the first thing to do...my friends all call them Woopie Pies and basicaly expect them when they come to a party at my house.

Back to the cake, a close up, I followed this tutorial and in case you were wondering I used a #16 icing tip...
Hulk symbol

Thor Symbol

Captain America Symbol

I spent so much time on the icing that I completely forgot what was on the inside, so when I cut it open, it really was a surprise to me too! haha...

I followed this tutorial.

Cake was a huge hit, and I'm so happy that everyone liked it, especially the birthday boy!

So that was our Avengers/Spiderman Party, although people at work tell me that Spiderman is now a part of Avengers...so, I guess we're okay on that front.

It was hot, so a pool party was the perfect way to start the Summer. And then we'll end the summer with Mini Fox's party in September...I'm thinking she's going to with Little Mermaid...or maybe Frozen, but that is a distant second.
