Favorite Places To Cool Off

Happy Monday Foxy Friends! Today we are off at Legoland, hopefully we won't need to cool off too much. Haha but if we did, a fun place to cool off at Legoland is the boat building station. They have base boats that you can decorate and then race down the "river", the kids get soaked and have a blast, but it's under the shade. Perfect for the kids to get a little wet and have a ton of fun.

Other things to do, find a splash pad, they are awesome and can provide hours of entertainment. We have a few near us, all of them are free, busy but free. Some of them you have to know someone in the community to get in, but usually it's not hard to find a friend.

This is by far the coolest one by us. It's open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, hours of fun for the kids!

Then there is always our gym pool, it's super fun, and Baby Fox is This Close to being tall enough to go down the slide. T here is also a small splash pad there too, but not nearly to the scale as the one above!

And it's always fun to go bowling, we took the kids for the first time this year and they LOVED it.

It's pretty cool, they have electric side bumpers now, so now more paying money for them to blow up the ones in the gutters, they just pop up if that person needs it. Plus they have a ramp for the kids to slide their balls down. So fun.

P.S. I may or may not own my own bowling ball and shoes.

Then you can't forget about the bazillion play places that have come around lately. Even if they are busy, it's air conditioned and the kids love it and run around and you can mostly talk to your friends.

I know ziplining, so fun right?!

Alright that's all I have for you. What do you have near you that you like to do to cool off. I didn't include our own pool, because I'm sure you'll all sick of seeing it. Thought I would share some new things!

Now go check out some of the other California Mama's and see how they like to cool off!

Lego Wall Display

Hello Foxy Friends! This year I decided that it was going to be the year of organization, I gave you an update here, so I thought I would share another project. It's been slow going, but over the weekend we got another project done. Our problem was that once Baby Fox finished a Lego set we had no where to put them. Then his friends would come over and destroy them and then we would spend approximately a bazillion hours trying to put it back together. I"m going to give Mr. full credit here, we talked about it, but he got it done. Found the shelves, ordered the Lego plates and installed everything. I just took pictures, and held up a measuring tape, and told him where to put the shelves and the plates. Let's get started.

*Some of the links are affiliate links and I will  either receive a small commission, at no cost to you, if you click on it or if you make a purchase from one of these links, I may also receive a commission on the sale of the product. By purchasing through Foxy's Domestic Side, you're helping me to continue creating fun things for this space.

Material:

Shelves (White and Yellow)
Brickyard Lego Plates

Optional: Spray Paint (color of your choice)

Directions:

Step 1

Decide where you want to put your shelves on your wall. We decided on getting 6 shelves to fill the whole space up.

Step 2

Measure a whole lot and figure out where each shelf is going to go.

Step 3

Start drilling holes and hanging shelves. Get some cute little helpers along the way.

Step 4

Have the kids decorate the Lego plates to keep them busy.

Step 5

After hanging all of the shelves, take the ones off that you want to paint. Baby Fox wanted all the white shelves painted green so Mr. bought a can of green spray paint that roughly matched the Lego color green. I forgot to take a picture of this, but our garage floor might remember that painting for a while, hehe.

Step 6

Once paint dries hang up all of the shelves and the Lego plates. We did make the Lego Plate removable, so he could change them out if he wanted to.

I just love the way that it came out, so perfect for him, and now he has a place to store his Lego sets and the wall has something on it. He used to have his baby quilt up there, but when we took that down earlier this year, it was so blank. I'm happy that something now lives in that empty space. Thank you Mr. for making this all happen. (Can I tell you how much it bothers me that there are two greens in a row...I couldn't convince him to switch it...)

Guest Post From Andrea @ Messy Nest Mama

Hello Foxy Friend! I hope you had a good weekend. I'm on my way back from vacation, so I have one more guest post for you! I'll be back tomorrow with a blog hop with my fellow Blended Blog ladies to showcase our favorite kitchen tools! Today I have another wonderful Mama, Andrea, from Messy Nest Mama, talking about getting your baby to sleep through the night. Funny enough, I have been meaning to write this post too, but every single thing she wrote here is exactly what I would have written too! So now I don't have to write it, okay take it away Andrea!

The idea of your baby sleeping through the night may make you laugh out loud, but it is possible,  I promise! I felt the same way a few months ago. I thought I would never sleep more than a few hours again in my life. Out of desperation I began reading up on baby sleep and found some things that really worked for us. These are my seven tips to get your baby to sleep through the night. They worked for this zombie mama and I hope that they work for you too! First I want to offer a disclaimer: my baby is not a perfect sleeper. Levi sleeps through the night most nights (8pm-6:30am) and some nights he wakes at 5am. Every now & then we have a really rough night & he's up at 1am and 5am. No baby sleep plan is foolproof. Babies go through many growth spurts and developmental leaps & as mamas we try to help them through as best as we can and that is where these tips come in! I will include affiliate links to the items that we use and love- be sure to check those out!

Seven Tips to Get Your Baby to Sleep Through the Night

1.Follow a routine- Plan your day around the EASY plan.
  • Eat- Feed baby
  • Activity- Play time
  • Sleep- Nap for baby
  • You- Time for Mama to relax or take a shower
By feeding baby first you ensure that he has plenty of energy to get in a good, full meal. This is very important as you will see in tip 2. To learn more about baby routines I read On Becoming Baby Wise and found it very helpful. Do not associate Babywise with cry it out- the author discusses letting baby fuss for a very small section of the book. The books main focus is getting to know your baby and creating a great routine for baby. This book has been a huge help for me! There is also a great Facebook group called Babywise Mamas that may be a good resource for you! 2. Be sure baby is getting full feeds- It is very important that baby takes full meals during each EASY cycle and does not just snack. You should start encouraging full meals from birth. You can do this by making sure baby does not fall asleep while eating by tickling his feet and back, removing his clothes, or simply taking a quick break from eating to refocus on the task at hand. Keep that little cutie awake and alert!

seven tips to get your baby to sleep through the night

3. Pay close attention to wake times- Each baby has an amount of time that they can handle being awake before they become overly tired. Suggested Wake Times Birth- 6 weeks- 45 minutes to 1 hour 6 weeks- 3 months- 1 hour to 1.5 hours 3-6 months- about 2 hours 6-9 months- 2.5 to 3 hours 9-12 months- about 3 hours This time includes the feeding. So if it takes your newborn baby 45 minutes to nurse (Levi was a slow nurser) then they may be ready for a nap right after eating, especially during the first few weeks.

The key is to watch for sleepy cues

Sleepy cues include:
  • yawning
  • sudden crankiness
  • rubbing eyes
As soon as you see a sleepy cue it is time for a nap ASAP! Then the YOU part (aka Mama time) starts! Be sure to use at least one cycle (or two!) to relax and enjoy the quiet. The cleaning can wait!   4. Use a white noise machine This can be a fan, air purifier, radio on static, or a white noise machine. Babies are used to the noisy sounds of the womb and will find white noise comforting. It will also help drown out the sounds of the house and other family members. We love the Nuk air purifier- puts out the perfect amount of noise and helps keep the pet dander of our golden retriever mix down! Find the air purifier by clicking here.   5. Swaddle I am a big fan of the swaddle for babies under three months old. There is not a lot of room in the womb! Babies are used to being in a tight space in their mamas bellies and find comfort in being held tight. From birth, swaddle your baby for night time sleep and naps. We used the Halo Swaddle Sleep Sack and loved it. It has a two way zipper so that you do not have to remove the swaddle during middle of the night diaper changes- this is key! Find the Halo Swaddle Sleep Sack by clicking here.

 6. Bedtime routine Establish a bedtime routine that you can follow every night. Be sure to separate feeding from bed by at least twenty minutes. Our nightly routine consists of bath, nursing, book, prayers and then bed. My husband & I really enjoy our bedtime routine. Both of us really love spending this quality time together as a family reading books and praying. My favorite book for little ones is On The Night You Were Born. I still cry when I read it to Levi- it is just the sweetest book! Find a routine that works for your family & that you can stick to every night.

7.Establish day & night During the day be sure that you keep the house bright and open the curtains. Get out of the house for a walk or sit on the porch to catch some sunshine rays! At night keep the lights low, close the curtains and keep things quiet. This will help regulate your baby's internal clock.

Guest Post From Kristie @ The Offical CEO Mom

Hello Foxy Friends! Today I have my first guest post from Kristie who is a kick butt mom doing her entrepreneurial thing. Today she is taking a break from that so she can talk about enjoying motherhood. Take it away Kristie!

Ayden, my third child, was born on my birthday weighing in at 7 pounds and 4 ounces! He came in screaming so the whole floor could hear him :). It was the most beautiful moment; more precious than I could have imagined.
I remember reading a blog post that I came across via Pinterest about how different it is to have three children. She wrote how you change how you parent by the time you have your third child. She wrote how you start out super overprotective with your first, wanting to get the best and most expensive items for your child. Things dial down a bit with the second and by the time your third comes, they are basically on their own. It was a really funny post. But my journey was quite different.

When I had my older two children, I was young and had no idea what I was doing half the time. I had to lean on my mom a lot. I enjoyed being a mother, but I was also working and going to school. I missed out on a lot. This time around, I am able to be more present. I am able to be at home and enjoy each and every one of Ayden's growing moments. I am older and more mature. Thankfully, I am in a place where I am able to take care of him. Watching him grow over the past few weeks has opened my eyes to just how much have grown.

Ayden was in the NICU the first few days after he was born. I spent every moment I could next to his bed; all day and all night. I only went home once to take a shower. Sorry, baths just were not of importance at that time! It was very hard to deal with. Tears would fall the moment a nurse would try to encourage me.
But what I learned from those few days was just how strong I am as a mother; something I briefly lost sight of.
He is a fighter. Despite the threats of pneumonia, failing lungs, and other breathing issues, I was able to bring my baby home. I left that hospital with a whole new perspective on motherhood.

Being a parent of one child is not easy. Three is definitely serving up to be a challenge; a beautiful one.
Finding balance has been a journey all on its own. But we are finally getting the hang of things.
I have found my joy for motherhood again. I look forward to packing lunches, homework sessions, and late night breastfeeding. Some days I sit and thank God for giving me these lives to raise and mentor through life.
Some of the parents I met in the NICU are still there, some of those babies won't get to come home at all. I am blessed to be a mother; I am blessed to be Nya, Micah, and Ayden's mom.

4 Tips to Raising Polite Confident Kids

Back in June, I wrote a post for Abbie from Grumbling Grace about raising polite confident kids
for her Mombies Unit Series.  Just in case you aren't in the know: Definition of Mombie (n.) - A sleep deprived supermom who feeds on caffeine and survives on sticky kisses and messy smiles. Mombies are master multi-taskers and suck it uppers.

I'm so excited to be a part of this Mombie group. I just love that term and what it means, seriously we can all relate! I knew I wanted to contribute but didn't know exactly what to write about, so many ideas floating around my head. . My first thought was how to potty train, since we're knee deep in it right now or how I felt about my youngest birth and how she came in 10 minutes after getting to the hospital, talk about close call! But then I read Kristin's post about how she became a stronger woman after motherhood and that got my juices flowing, so thank you Kristin!

Kristin spoke about being shy and how she got easily embarrassed when she was younger, and not until she was a mother that it made her let go of what people thought of her. For me it was the same thing, I was super shy when I was younger, heck even when we I met my husband and we would go out to restaurants I would never directly speak to the waiter, I was so shy! Meeting me now you never would have guessed that. Mr. worked with me a lot, getting me to speak up. Discovering I have food allergies helped a lot with my shy-ness. I had to speak up for myself at restaurants or I wouldn't get any of the food I actually want.

All this to say, that Mr. and I want our kids to grow up confident but polite. We don't want them to be shy at restaurants when ordering their food, or when they need something else, we want them to be able to politely flag down the waiter/waitress and ask them for what they need with a please and a thank you. We want them to grow up and speak up for themselves and I believe that it all starts with manners.

It's a blurry picture but I just love that he was dancing with her because she wanted him to

1. Begin Early

Just like anything, we are continually on them about their manners. I mean from the moment we started handing them things we would hand it to them and say "Say thank you Mama/Daddy", even though they couldn't talk yet. Even now we continue to do this. If either of our kids want anything they know they need to say please. Here's an example of a conversation with our 5 year old:

Baby Fox: I want water
Me: That's nice
Baby Fox: I WANT WATER
Me: That's nice to know, care to ask it differently?
Baby Fox: May I please have some water, please? (this is typically how he says it, adds a lot of pleases in there, we don't correct him...)

We do the same thing with our 2 year old, we're a little more lenient with her as she is still learning and we are still teaching.

Mini Fox: Wa-wa (water)
Me: That's nice
Mini Fox: Wa-wa
Me: Can you add a please?
Mini Fox: Please..
Me: Now put it in a sentence
Mini Fox: Wa-wa Please..

2. Have the same rules at home as you do in public

This then translates to how they act at restaurants. Even before anyone else can understand them when the waiter comes to get our order we always make them order and then translate it for the waiter. When they are super young 20 months or so, we would prompt them, since they are in that parroting phase, we would tell them what to say to the waiter. Of course always making them add a please and a thank you when ordering and when drinks or food arrive.

3. Be patient and be consistent as you teach specific skills

We always make them look the people directly in their eyes when speaking to them, so if they are looking down, we tell them look them in the eyes when talking to them. When someone gives them something and they off offhandedly say thank you, we make them stop, turn around and say thank you to them while looking directly at them.

People often remark how polite our children are. Heck when Mini Fox started talking she was so polite that even when crying she would be crying and scream No THANK YOU over and over. Our response is always thank you (haha), but in our heads to each other we say, because we shove pleases and thank yous down their throat.

4. Practice and Repetition are Keys to Confidence Later

I think that being able to talk to adults politely helps them with their confidence. Making them look people in the eyes while talking teaches them not to be shy. Letting them order their food teaches them they can do this on their own. Making them flag down a waiter also teaches them confidence, they have just as much power as an adult to get someone's attention. Obviously there is more to it, but this was how we started, simply with teaching them manners.

It's never too early to start to teach them, even if they can't talk, they are continually learning by our example.

Hope you found this helpful!

Handprint Flower Bouquet

As promised, here is the hand print flower tutorial.

What You'll Need:

Paper
Paint - various colors if you want it colorful
Paint brush
sissors
Green pipe cleaner - I'm still using the pack of pipe cleaner from this project

What To do:

Step 1: Get your kids to make hand prints on your paper. Let me tell ya, getting a 4.5 month old hand print is hard work!

Step 2: Cut out the hand prints for your "flower" bloom

Step 3: Tape the pipe cleaner "stem" to the back of the hand

Step 4:  Make some "leaves"

I cut one pipe cleaner in half. Place pipe cleaner about where you want the leaf.

Put one side behind the "stem" and one side in front of the "stem"

Then I just folded it around the stem

Wrap the bottom half of your leaf

Do the same to for your other leaf.

Make as many or as little leaves as you want.

Have your kid give it to someone you love. It will make their day, really

Put flowers in a cute vase (Baby Fox wanted to give my mom the flowers while I wasn't home, so I never got a finished product picture. So I had to ask my mom to take one with her phone and send it to me, it was a miracle that a)she knew how to take a picture and b) that she knew how to send it, so I couldn't then get picky and ask her to send another one that wasn't blurry. Next time I go over there, I'll take a better picture).

See it was super simple to throw together if you need a last minute craft for someone.

Happy Friday! Hope you have a great weekend! I survived my first 5 day week of work, looking forward to spending some time with my kids and sleeping in past 4:30am!
